Season One: Body
Clary is thrown into the Shadow World after seeing three Shadowhunters: Jace Herondale, Alec and Isabelle Lightwood, defeat a demon at Pandemonium, discovering that her mother, Jocelyn Fairchild, lied to her about her true identity and after her mother is kidnapped (Shadowhunters: 1.01). Furthermore, Clary is also shown to be friends with, Simon Lewis, who accepts her true identity when she tells him that she is a Shadowhunter (Shadowhunters: 1.01, 1.02) Additionally, Clary is accepted by Jace Herondale and Isabelle Lightwood and a reluctant, Alec Lightwood, who all agree to help her find her mother, Jocelyn, who was taken by Valentine Morgenstern, who turns out to be her father (Shadowhunters: 1.01, 1.02).
During the search for Valentine and Jocelyn, Isabelle, Jace and Alec, help Clary accept her identity or teach her about the Shadow World. For instance, Isabelle helps Clary, to accept that she is a Shadowhunter by birth, Jace teaches Clary how to use s seraph blade, and Alec teaches her how to fight (Shadowhunters: 1.02, 1.03, 1.05). In addition, Alec also teaches Clary that Shadowhunters believe that, “the law is hard, but it’s the law” (Shadowhunters: 1.05). All of these moments help enable Clary to accept her identity.
Yet, Magnus Bane and Luke Garroway, also help Clary learn and accept that she is Shadowhunter. This is shown when Magnus explains to Clary that Shadowhunters have never viewed Downworlders as their equals, what her father did in the Circle and that, Jocelyn, ended her marriage with Valentine in order to protect Clary (Shadowhunters: 1.06). Furthermore, Luke tells Clary about Valentine’s enthrallment with human experimentation, that Valentine set him up to become a werewolf when he noticed the close relationship between Luke and Jocelyn, and tells her that she has a brother, whom Valentine murdered (Shadowhunters: 1.06).
The examples of Clary learning about the Shadow World continue throughout the rest of the series, where Clary comes to accept her identity and begins to make some decisions of her own in this world. One example is when she, with Jace’s and Raphael’s help, brings Simon Lewis back as a vampire after he is murdered by Camille Belcourt (Shadowhunters: 1.08). Another example is after, Clary and Jace, have been in a romantic relationship and Clary learns that Jace is her brother, during one of her encounters with Valentine (Shadowhunters: 1.07, 1.11). During this encounter, Clary accepts that she and Jace are family, and they break up (Shadowhunter: 1.11).
Then, at the end of the series, when Clary offers to give Valentine the Book of the White, which contains a spell which will enable Magnus to wake Jocelyn, who is in a coma (Shadowhunters: 1.13). Clary offers to give him the book, once he takes the people who have become her family hostage: Jace, Alec, Isabelle, Simon and Magnus (Shadowhunters: 1.13). However, Valentine does not take the book and demands that Jace leave with him and in return, he will let the others go (Shadowhunters: 1.13). Jace agrees and they go through a portal, only for Clary to try and follow, and Alec to stop her explaining that, “If you enter a portal not knowing where you’re going, you’ll be stuck in limbo forever” (Shadowhunters: 1.13). From there, everyone else returns to the New York Institute and Magnus wakes, Jocelyn (Shadowhunters: 1.13).
Throughout the season, Clary comes to fully accept her identity and take part in choosing what to do in this world. Furthermore, this only happens because of the love her friends, who have become her family and the support they show her when she is coming to terms with her new normal.

Season One: Body
From the beginning of season one, Jace and Alec, are shown to always have each other’s backs, but also to be at odds with one another. One example is when Jace wants to take an unsanctioned mission at Pandemonium, and Alec does not (Shadowhunters: 1.01). However, they end up going on the mission with Isabelle Lightwood (Shadowhunters: 1.01). This pattern continues when Jace wants to help Clary Fairchild, and Alec does not (Shadowhunters: 1.01). In fact, it is only later during one of their disagreements over Clary, that we learn they are Parabatai (Shadowhunters: 1.03).
Their disagreements continue throughout the course of the season, until things escalate to a physical fight over Clary, the fact that Alec is marrying Lydia Branwell, and Jace believing that Alec has feelings for him (Shadowhunters: 1.08, 1.09). During the course of their fight, Alec defeats Jace, and puts a seraph blade to his throat (Shadowhunters: 1.09). After Alec puts the blade to his throat, Jace says, “I don’t want to be alive if we’re on different sides, Alec” (Shadowhunters: 1.09), and Alec backs off (Shadowhunters: 1.09). Once their fight is over, Jace and Alec, remain at odds and stay away from one other. Additionally, when Alec wants to find Jace and cannot, he chooses to track Jace, through their Parabatai rune and weakens their bond (Shadowhunters: 1.10).
Furthermore, they only reconcile when Isabelle Lightwood sets them up to meet at Alec’s bachelor party (Shadowhunters: 1.12). In this part, Jace apologizes to Alec, “I never wanted to hurt you. I’m sorry” (Shadowhunters: 1.12) and Alec replies, “I know” (Shadowhunters: 1.12). Once they have apologized to each other, they have another conversation that focuses on the topic of forbidden desire. During their conversation, Jace speaks to Alec, about the fact that Alec is denying his sexuality (Shadowhunters: 1.12). Then, Alec speaks with Jace, about Jace being Clary’s brother and the fact that Jace and Clary were romantically involved when they did not know that they were related (Shadowhunters: 1.07, 1.11, 1.12).
At one point in the conversation, Jace says, “I must be sick or something” (Shadowhunters: 1.12), in response to his desire for Clary (Shadowhunters: 1.12). Alec then tells him, “No. No. You’re not sick. The situation is confusing. Trust me, I know” (Shadowhunters: 1.12). Alec’s response is refereeing his situation with Magnus Bane, and eventually, he tells Jace that,” If you get knocked off the path, you have to focus…find your way back” (Shadowhunters: 1.12). Jace’s reply to him is that, “You still have to be true to yourself” (Shadowhunters: 1.12).
From there, Alec stays set to marry Lydia, and asks Jace to be his Suggene (Best man) and they tell each other that they will always be there for each other (Shadowhunters: 1.12). This reply, is what exemplifies what their bond means – that no matter what or who comes between them they will always be there for one another. Furthermore, the fact that they will always be there for one another is what shows love and acceptance.

Season One: Body
Throughout season one of Shadowhunters, Alec, struggles to accept his homosexuality. This is shown in season one, episode four, “Raising Hell,” when Magnus agrees to summon the Valak demon for Alec and Isabelle Lightwood, Jace Herondale and Clary Fairchild. Furthermore, the summoning of the Valek demon is so that Clary can retrieve her memories of the Shadow World, which Magnus took at Jocelyn’s request (Shadowhunters: 1.04). During the summoning, the Valek demon demands a memory of the person that each of them “love the most” (Shadowhunters: 1.04) and Alec’s memory is of Jace (Shadowhunters: 1.04).
Once Alec’s memory is revealed, he says, “It’s not true” (Shadowhunters: 1.04). Alec’s response, is because he believes that he is attracted to Jace, and does not want to be accused of being homosexual (Shadowhunters: 1.04, 1.05). From there, Alec breaks the circle that they have formed to contain the Valak demon, the demon escapes, hurts Jace, and Clary kills it with her seraph blade (Shadowhunters: 1.04). After Jace is confirmed to be okay, Magnus tells Alec, “There’s nothing to be ashamed of” (Shadowhunters: 1.04), to which Alec replies, “I don’t know what you’re talking about'' (Shadowhunters: 1.04).
This type of denial continues, in episode five, “Moo Shu to Go,” when Clary accuses Alec of being in love with Jace, and he says to her, “You’re in love with Jace” (Shadowhunters: 1.05). Then, the denial continues again, in episode eight, “Bad Blood,” when Alec proposes to Lydia Branwell, to please his parents, Maryse and Robert Lightwood, and to keep control of the New York Institute, because his parents were former Circle members. Furthermore, his denial continues, in episode nine, “Rise up,” when Jace confronts Alec about Clary, Lydia, and the fact that Alec has feelings for him. Then once again, in episode ten, “This World Inverted,” and episode eleven, Blood Calls to Blood,” when Alec continues to stay engaged to Lydia. However, while Alec’s denial continues for a time, in episode twelve, “Malec,” when he speaks to Magnus, and then to Jace at his bachelor party- at his wedding, he stops denying his feelings and kisses Magnus.
After their kiss, Alec and Magnus get together, even though Alec’s parents disapprove of him being with a “Downworlder” (Shadowhunters: 1.12). When his mother expresses her distaste and anger, Alec tells her, “I’m the same person I’ve always been. Now, everything is just out in the open” (Shadowhunters: 1.12). With that said, Jace, Isabelle and Clary, accept Alec and Magnus. Yet, arguably what is most important, is that Alec has come to accept himself, and acts on his true feelings for Magnus.
