Love and Acceptance

“The Mortal Instruments is a story about what love can do but also, more broadly, about what our connections to other people can enable us to overcome.” – Gwenda Bond on page 125 of her essay, “Asking for a Friend,” in Shadowhunters and Downworlders: A Mortal Instruments Reader.

Love and Acceptance: Intro

An Introduction to Love and Acceptance in Shadowhunters

In this series, you see “love” (Bond 125) and “connections” (Bond 125), through the bonds of many different characters. Furthermore, it is through these “connections” (Bond 125) in this series, that one learns “Blood doesn’t matter. Tradition doesn’t matter, and following the accustomed forms and rules of family doesn’t matter. Love is what matters” (Brennan 196-197). The following sections will take a look at a few characters and the different bonds that they have formed in this series. For instance, Clary Fairchild and the friendships she has made, the Parabatai bond between Jace Herondale and Alec Lightwood and the romantic relationship between Magnus Bane and Alec Lightwood.
