Connections
Clary is Jocelyn Fairchild and Valentine Morgenstern’s daughter (Shadowhunters: 1.01,1.02). She is also the younger sister of Jonathan Morgenstern (Shadowhunters: 1.06). As far as love interest, she is Jace Herondale’s former lover (Shadowhunters: 1.07, 3.22). Furthermore, she is the friend and former lover of Simon Lewis (Shadowhunters: 1.01,2.08,2.15) In addition, Clary is friends with Luke Garroway, Magnus Bane, and Isabelle and Alec Lightwood (Shadowhunters: 1.01). Finally, she later becomes Maia Robert’s friend (Shadowhunters: 2.13).
Background
Clary is an “artist” and is portrayed as being “determined, super stubborn, and courageous” (Cross 21). She was raised by Jocelyn with the help of Luke as a mundane with no knowledge of the Shadow World or her father until her eighteenth birthday (Shadowhunters: 1.01). On her birthday, she learns everything after her mother is kidnapped by Valentine and she is found by Jace Herondale who takes her to the New York Institute (Shadowhunters: 1.01).
Abilities
The Sight, the ability to fight with weapons and hand-to-hand combat (Shadowhunters: 1.01, 1.03, 1.05).
The ability to place physical objects into paper and remove them (Shadowhunters: 1.01,1.06).
Unlike Jonathan who has pure demon blood, Valentine gave Clary and Jace Herondale pure angel blood and a blood connection to Ithuriel when he experimented on them (Shadowhunters: 1.06, 2.08, 2.10). Clary’s pure angel blood allows her to see visions of new runes not in the Grey Book and then to create them (Shadowhunters: 2.05). For instance, Clary is able to create a portal rune which is something that only Warlocks have been able to do in the past through their magic (Shadowhunters: 2.16). Also, another example is the Alliance Rune that she created in order to allow Shadowhunters and Downworlders to be bound together if they chose to do so (Shadowhunters: 3.21).
