When writing my poem, '"In Reply to Christopher Marlowe's "It lies not in our power to love or hate,"' my goal was to have a conversation with Marlowe, and to give my own view on love. To do that, I decided to remix his poem. I did so by agreeing with him at the beginning of his poem by keeping the lines, "It lies not in our power to love or hate/For will in us is overruled by fate" and adding, "It's true" before them. Furthermore, I chose to disagree with Marlowe at the end of my poem. To clarify, Marlowe asks us to consider this question in the final line of his poem, "Who ever loved, that loved not at first sight" and while I respect his view - I do not agree. Therefore, I changed the line to, "Love is more than what happens at first sight" to emphasize love is loving someone despite their flaws.
