Both Mary Shelley’s novel, Frankenstein, and Brian Yorkey and Tom Kitt’s play, Next to Normal, portray a family in crisis, and showcase the negative and positive aspects of the topic of human love. This paper will consider human love through the idea of a family in crisis. Furthermore, this will be done by looking at how the thematic elements in Shelley’s novel may have influenced Yorkey and Kitt’s play. These elements will include control and knowledge obtained from experimentation.
